Mike Witcher (Dobro) & Ryan Cavanaugh (Banjo)- Salt Creek

I really need to work on more single-string playing…

Introduce yourself to one of the greatest dobro-ers and one of the greatest banjoists in the country. Impressive stuff.

Give special attention to Cavanaugh’s pickin’ style. One of a kind.

Found on Imgur, this is probably the most beautiful banjo I’ve ever seen.

The one and only, Bela Fleck.

Looking for some killer bluegrass banjo? Look no further than Jens Kruger.

You hit the nail on the head here: “And yet with how refined the Avetts are these days, I feel that we’ve lost something.”

The Avett Brothers - Cripple Creek (Live at the Double Door)

This is the song we’re learning in my banjo class right now. I know I should be listening to a good version to internalize the song, but damn if I ain’t a sucker for Scotty’s take-no-prisoners banjo-thrashing. His musicianship has come a long way in these last six years, that’s for sure. And yet with how refined the Avetts are these days, I feel that we’ve lost something.

In honor of the new Spotify integration with Tumblr, I’m posting “The Hitchhiker,” a kick-ass track from the new Infamous Stringdusters album “Silver Sky.”

These guys are great live, go see them if you get the chance!

J.D. Crowe announced today that he’s retiring at the end of 2012. In honor of this legendary banjo man, check out this video of “Old Home Place” with the classic 1975 lineup of J.D. Crowe and the New South featuring Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas  & Bobby Slone.
